Springing into business
As a mother of two, Julie Bishop from Lee-on-the-Solent, had attended a number of toddler groups and found they provided great fun for the children, but also a relaxed environment for mothers to share experiences and discuss child issues. After visiting a special music and movement group for young children, Julie’s enthusiasm for the interaction it encouraged with both parents and their children, lead to a brilliant business idea.

Helping part-time at a local toddler group, Julie introduced and found she enjoyed the music and movement time during the session. With two children now settled at school, she finally had the opportunity to pursue her dream business and set up her own children’s music and movement group. With plenty of ideas but not sure where to start, Julie signed up for the Women into Business programme offered by Business Link.

Julie said:” I realised that Lee-on-the-Solent had a gap in the market for a music and movement group for the under 5s, but I had so many questions about setting up my own business. Did I have the confidence to do it? How would I start? Where would I hold my sessions? How would I finance it? Women into Business answered all my questions and more.

In April 2006 I completed a six week course and learnt the values of sales and marketing and how to put a business plan together to get financial backing. It also taught me about the legal aspects of liability insurance and health and safety, as well as introducing me to some very useful contacts. I came away really confident and prepared to make my dream happen.”

Julie launched ‘Spring-a-Lings’ Musical Movement & Activities for under 5’s in September 2006 and had a great response, with 32 children attending her first session. Promoting her group by offering FREE taster sessions at local pre-schools, Julie soon went from running two public sessions a week, to four at various family centres around Lee-on-the-Solent, and more recently being hired as a party entertainer. As all the activities she offers sit with the national curriculum, she now also runs regular sessions within pre-schools and is so busy she will soon be looking at franchise options or employing help.
